What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary health-care profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body, particularly those of the spine.

Treatment consists of a wide range of manipulative techniques designed to improve the function of the joints, relieving pain and muscle spasm. Chiropractic does not involve the use of any drugs or surgery.

What will happen during a consultation?
During the first visit up to one hour is spent taking a full medical history and completing a thorough musculoskeletal examination. Should Xrays, MRI scans or further tests be deemed necessary there is the option of referral to a nearby hospital. The treatment itself may involve gentle chiropractic manipulation, massage, stretching, cold therapy, dry needling, trigger point work and when suitable, strengthening exercises for the core muscles. Advice is also given on how to look after the body at work and at home. Should somebody not be suitable for chiropractic they will be referred directly to an appropriate specialist or to the GP.
